Fool's Fall and Wherewithal

Well, guys, it seems to me like we’re entering the last of the summer days. While it’s technically already fall, we’re seeing seasonally warm temperatures across the US and (hopefully) enjoying the last bit of nice weather before Mother Nature introduces fall in full swing. I can only speak for myself, but I think it’s fair to say that in Wisconsin we’ve once again gotten ahead of ourselves, bundling up in sweaters and putting the extra cozy blankets on the couch. These are typical signs of fool’s fall, the without-fail fake-out we get every year. Maybe it’s just me, but I absolutely love that first bundled-up weekend even before the leaves have started to change. It’s a reminder of the fun fall activities of my childhood and now induces the excitement of pulling out my coziest sweaters and favorite long coats.

Of course, with fall weather comes back to school and, by proxy, cold and flu season. I don’t know about you, but I’ve heard of so many friends and family getting sick recently that perhaps the thick of cold and flu season may have started a bit early this year. As these last few days of warm weather (colloquially called “second summer”) come to an end, we’re heading full throttle into actual fall, where immunity comes at a premium.

Fortunately, TravelVita is an all-around supplement equipped to support you through shoulder season and beyond. Safe for daily use, TravelVita packs small and fights strong. Whether it’s daily life, a road trip, or a red eye, TravelVita bolsters your immunity when it matters most. Armed with vitamin B complex, vitamin C, zinc, and echinacea, this do-it-all supplement sets up your immunity with ease. Taken once daily and once nightly, the supplements go to work, bracing your immune system for changing conditions and giving you the wherewithal to brave all the seasons.

While TravelVita is a go-to proactive step to combat flu season, if you do fall victim this year, there are numerous other measures to help you recover quickly. One well-loved home remedy is fire cider, a punch-packing tonic designed to knock your illness down before it knocks you down. A personal favorite of mine, my fire cider contains apple cider vinegar, ginger, turmeric, lemon, and lots of garlic, served with a healthy (read: giant) spoon of local honey.

To make fire cider, find a large jar (a 64 oz mason jar is my preference), and toss in the following:

    • 3 cups of apple cider vinegar (the one with “the mother” is best for probiotic properties!)

    • 1 cup of roughly chopped ginger root

    • ⅓ cup of roughly chopped turmeric root (turmeric powder works too but the fresh stuff is preferred)

    • 12 garlic cloves (smashed)

    • 3 lemons sliced

    • 1 orange sliced

    • 2 cinnamon sticks (or more to your liking)

    • A sprinkle of whole peppercorns

I’ve seen other recipes that include horseradish, jalapenos, onion, and various herbs. Keep in mind that this recipe is flexible – make it your own, to the liking of you and your family.

Once assembled, the ingredients should be fully submerged in the apple cider vinegar. Store in a cool, dark place for 3-4 weeks, allowing it to ferment and fully develop its beneficial properties. Remember to shake the jar once daily and strain the cider into another container after it has fermented. Store in the fridge after straining.

I like to put two teaspoons of the fire cider in hot water with a fresh slice of lemon and, as previously mentioned, a nice helping of honey. It’s a warming blend of anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-nausea powerhouse ingredients that make for a nice morning and/or evening ritual alongside your TravelVita routine. With tried-and-true remedies like fire cider and an all-in-one supplement like TravelVita by your side, you’re well-equipped to enjoy this fall to the fullest. Be well!
